The vibe: pop, but soft

Some days I want my eyes to look like they’re doing the most… without actually doing the most 😌 No heavy lashes, no harsh black lines, no “full beat” pressure. Just that clean, lifted, glowy eye situation where people go: “Wait… what did you do?”

This is my go-to guide for how to make your eyes pop using easy makeup placement, color theory (yes, the color wheel!), and even a little photo editing at the end for that “main character energy” look.

Step 1: Start with the easiest “pop” trick—contrast

If there’s one rule that always works, it’s this: eyes pop when the surrounding tones make them look brighter. That can mean warmth around the lids, deeper definition at the lash line, or a shade that contrasts your iris.

Instead of thinking “more makeup,” think smarter contrast. Tiny changes = big difference.

Step 2: Use the color wheel (this is the cheat code)

This is the part that makes everything click. To make your eye color stand out, pick shades that sit directly across from your eye color on the color wheel. Those opposite shades create the strongest pop because they’re complementary.

Color wheel picks (save this mentally)

If you have blue eyes: orange is the power move. Think copper, terracotta, peach, warm bronze, or even a pink that leans warm. If true orange feels scary, a rosy-peach is still close enough to give that effect.

If you have green eyes: lean into mauves, plums, soft berries, and red-browns. Anything in that wine/rose family makes green look extra bright.

If you have brown eyes: honestly, brown eyes can wear almost anything, but the “extra pop” shades are usually purple, grey, and gold. Jewel tones also look insane: emerald, sapphire, amethyst. Earth tones work too, especially when you want a natural glow.

If you have hazel eyes: treat them like a mix—gold/bronze to pull out warmth, plum/mauve to pull out green, and deep brown to sharpen the shape.

Where to place that “opposite” color (so it doesn’t feel like a costume)

You do not need a full rainbow eye. The easiest placement is one of these:

Option A (most subtle): tap the complementary shade on the outer corner like a soft eyeliner smudge.

Option B (most eye-opening): add a hint of that shade under the lower lash line, keeping it close to the lashes.

Option C (bold but still wearable): place it in the waterline for that instant “wow.” This works especially well if you keep everything else soft.

The point is: a small hint of the right color can do more than a full lid of the wrong one.

Step 3: Bronzer on the eyelids = effortless glow

My favorite approach is brown pencil instead of black. Brown defines without looking heavy, and it still makes the eye shape look sharper.

Want extra definition? Add a touch of brown eyeliner on the lower waterline (especially the outer half). It gives that “OOTD face is done” energy without screaming eyeliner.

Step 5: Mascara choice matters more than people admit

Black mascara can be stunning, but if you’re going for soft, lifted, natural pop: brown mascara over black is underrated.

Brown mascara gives definition while keeping the eye area airy. It’s especially flattering in daylight, on minimal makeup days, or when you’re doing glossy lids and brushed brows.

If you want a fun twist for brown eyes: a tiny touch of blue mascara on the bottom lashes can look so pretty and unexpected, especially with neutral shadow on top.

Step 6: Glossy eyelids (yes, really)

Glossy lids are one of those little tricks that catch light every time you blink. It reads fresh, natural, and eye-catching—like your skin is just healthy and hydrated.

Keep it simple: use a balm or a sheer gloss texture tapped lightly on the lid (not too close to the crease if your lids fold a lot). The goal is a soft sheen, not a slippery mess.

Pairing glossy lids with tightlined brown liner and brown mascara is that “no heavy makeup” combo that still makes eyes look bigger.

Step 7: Nude/beige pencil in the lower waterline (instant awake)

This is the “secret” that makes people ask if you slept 9 hours 😭

A nude or beige pencil on the lower waterline helps cancel redness and makes the eye look more open. White can look intense on some people, so beige/nude is usually more natural.

If you love the brightening effect but want it subtle, apply it only to the center of the waterline instead of corner to corner.

Step 8: Feathered brows = lifted eye area

Brows frame the entire eye space. When brows are brushed up and softly shaped, the whole area looks more open.

Try feathered brows: brush hairs upward and slightly outward. Keep the front of the brow lighter and less “blocked in” so the eyes look bigger and fresher.

Try this combo:

1) Bronzer on lids (warm bronze/peach vibes)

2) Brown tightline (upper lash line)

3) Brown mascara

4) Nude/beige waterline if you want bigger-looking eyes

5) Optional: a hint of peach/pink under the lower lash line for extra contrast

Also, warm tones in your overall look can amplify it. Even things like brown and red tones in hair or warm outfit colors can make blue eyes look brighter because the contrast is working all day.

Brown eyes: earth + jewel tones are your best friend

Brown eyes can go soft and glowy or deep and dramatic—both pop.

Soft glow route: golds, bronzes, warm browns, caramel tones. Add nude waterline + brown mascara and it’s effortless.

Extra pop route: jewel tones like purple, blue, and green. Even a tiny purple liner or a purple shadow smudged at the outer corner makes brown eyes look richer.

Go-to dramatic route: a dark brown smokey eye with black tight eyeliner can be unreal for nighttime. If black feels too harsh for daytime, keep black only in the tightline and smoke brown shadow around it.

Green/hazel eyes: mauves are magic

If green or hazel eyes ever look “flat,” it’s usually because the surrounding makeup is too neutral-cool or too similar in tone. Mauves, plums, and berry shades bring the contrast back.

Even if you’re doing a minimal look, try a soft mauve shadow under the eye or a plum-brown liner. It’s subtle but it makes the iris look clearer.

Skin tone + tan effect (the glow factor)

This is not about changing skin tone—it’s about understanding contrast. When the skin around the eyes looks warmer and more bronzed, the eyes often look brighter by comparison.

That’s why bronzer on lids and a warm-toned face can make eyes look like they’re glowing. If you love that “summer” effect, keep the warmth focused on the high points of the face and the eyelids so everything looks cohesive and natural.

“How do your eyes pop like that?” The tiny details people miss

Clean under-eye area: even minimal concealer (blended well) makes the whites of the eyes look clearer.

Keep shimmer strategic: shimmer on the lid center or inner corner gives roundness. Too much shimmer everywhere can flatten the shape.

Outer corner depth: a small touch of deeper shadow at the outer corner lifts the eye more than adding product all over.

Waterline choice: nude/beige to open, brown to deepen, complementary color to pop. Pick the mood.

Bonus: edit your photos so your eyes pop (without weird color shifts)

Sometimes the makeup looks perfect in real life, but the camera makes everything look dull. If you want your eyes to pop in photos without turning the whole picture red/yellow, try gentle edits like these (adjust based on your lighting):

Exposure: lower a bit (around -30)

Brilliance: slightly down (around -10)

Highlights: down (around -14) to keep bright areas from washing out

Shadows: down a touch (around -11) for definition

Brightness: slightly down (around -17) so the eyes don’t get lost

Black point: down (around -24) to add depth

Saturation: small boost (around +10) so iris color shows up

Warmth: up a little (around +17) if your photo looks too cool

Sharpness: up slightly (around +12) for crisp lashes and brows
